The Salaried Employee's Tax Guide

CTC is what the company spends on you. It is not the amount that reaches your bank account. Tax, your own PF, and professional tax come out first. The rupee limits below follow the Income-tax Act, 2025 and the CBDT threshold table labelled AY 2026-27. This guide is about salary earned in FY 2026-27. That financial year and the AY 2026-27 label are not the same year.

From CTC to take-home

CTC (cost to company) is the total your employer spends on you. It is not your take-home pay. Employer PF and gratuity are part of that cost. They are not cash you can spend this month. Income tax, your own PF, and professional tax are then cut from the salary that is left. The same package can be taxed differently depending on how it is split. The old regime still exempts some allowances. The new regime taxes most of them.

Five items people skip

These five change either your tax or the cash you actually receive. They are easy to miss if you only look at the CTC number on the offer letter.

check_circle Employer PF BOTH REGIMES

Your employer's PF, up to 12% of basic pay, is not taxed in either regime. It sits inside CTC and never shows up as salary you can spend. This is not Section 80CCD(2). That section is employer NPS, covered further down.

check_circle Your own PF (Section 80C)

The 12% you contribute counts toward the ₹1.5 lakh Section 80C limit. If PF already fills that limit, extra PPF or ELSS will not cut tax any further. Section 80C applies only in the old regime.

check_circle TDS on salary

Your employer cuts tax every month under Section 192. The cut is smaller if you declare rent, insurance, and investments on time. If too much was cut, claim it back when you file the return.

check_circle Professional tax

States charge this, and the cap is ₹2,500 a year. Your employer deducts it. You can subtract it from salary under Section 16(iii) only in the old regime. Section 115BAC blocks that deduction in the new regime. Delhi does not charge professional tax.

check_circle Gratuity

The gratuity line in CTC is about 4.81% of basic pay. It does not reduce your monthly salary. You receive it when you leave, and Section 10(10) exempts gratuity up to ₹20 lakh. Estimate the cheque with the gratuity calculator.

03

Which tax regime usually costs less

The new regime is the default under Section 115BAC. You stay in it unless you opt out in the income-tax return. Use the table as a starting point, then check your own salary in the calculator.

Taxable Income Better Regime Why
0 to 5L NEW WINS 87A rebate makes tax zero under both, but new has higher SD (75K vs 50K)
5L to 12L NEW USUALLY WINS Unless heavy 80C (1.5L) + HRA metro + home loan interest in old regime
12L to 16L NEW WINS Marginal relief band. New regime tax is capped at income above 12L
16L+ OLD MAY WIN If HRA metro + 80C 1.5L + 80D + Home Loan 2L + NPS. Run the calculator.
check_circle Rule of Thumb

Under ₹12 lakh of taxable income, check the new regime first. Above ₹16 lakh, with metro rent, Section 80C, health insurance, and a home loan, the old regime can cost less. Between those bands, run both.

04

House rent allowance, and who counts as a metro

HRA is exempt only in the old regime. Under Section 10(13A) and Rule 2A, the exempt amount is the lowest of these three:

Actual HRA received Option 1
Rent paid minus 10% of basic Option 2
50% of Basic (metro) or 40% (non-metro) Option 3

Rule 2A treats only four cities as metros for the 50% test: Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Chennai. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and every other city use 40% of basic pay.

Delhi 50% METRO
Mumbai 50% METRO
Chennai 50% METRO
Kolkata 50% METRO
warning RENT TO SPOUSE

Rent paid to a spouse is often questioned. Declare HRA on Form 12BB. This page does not use a "Form 124".

05

Standard Deduction

Per CBDT employees benefits table (s.16(ia), AY 2026-27):

NEW REGIME
₹75,000

A flat cut from salary. No bills. Budget 2024 raised this figure.

OLD REGIME
₹50,000

Still ₹50,000, the same since FY 2019-20. That is ₹25,000 less than the new regime.

check_circle Family Pension Deduction

If you receive a family pension, Section 57(iia) allows ₹25,000 in the new regime and ₹15,000 in the old regime.

06

Section 80C: the ₹1.5 lakh limit

OLD REGIME ONLY

Only the old regime. Section 80C, together with 80CCC and 80CCD(1), stops at ₹1,50,000 on the CBDT threshold table. These payments can sit inside that cap:

check_circle EPF (employee share)
check_circle PPF
check_circle ELSS
check_circle Life insurance premium (≤10% SA)
check_circle Home loan principal
check_circle Stamp duty + registration
check_circle Tuition fees (max 2 children)
check_circle NSC
check_circle 5-year tax-saver FD
check_circle ULIP (≤10% SA)
check_circle SSY (Sukanya Samriddhi)
check_circle SCSS (Senior Citizens)
check_circle Post Office 5-year TD
check_circle Infrastructure bonds
warning COMMON MISTAKES
  • If the ULIP premium is more than 10% of the sum assured, the whole Section 80C claim for that policy is denied
  • Employee PF already uses part of the ₹1.5 lakh Section 80C limit. Do not count it again.
  • Stamp duty must be claimed in year of payment, not year of possession
  • Tuition fees: max 2 children, only Indian institutions
07

Section 80D: health insurance

OLD REGIME ONLY

Your own family and your parents have separate limits. A preventive check-up of up to ₹5,000 sits inside those limits. It is not an extra amount on top.

Bucket Non-Senior Senior (60+)
Self + spouse + dependent children ₹25,000 ₹50,000
Parents (separate bucket) ₹25,000 ₹50,000
Preventive health check-up (sub-limit) ₹5,000 ₹5,000
Senior medical expenditure (no insurance) Not available ₹50,000
Maximum combined ₹50,000 ₹1,00,000

You cannot pay the insurance premium in cash and still claim it. A preventive health check-up can be paid in cash, up to the ₹5,000 sub-limit.

08

NPS: three sections, not one

NPS is not EPF. Your own NPS payment, an extra ₹50,000, and your employer's NPS payment are three different sections.

Tier Section Cap Old New
Self contribution 80CCD(1) Within 80C (1.5L) check close
Extra NPS 80CCD(1B) ₹50,000 check check
Employer contribution 80CCD(2) 14% (new + central govt) / 10% (old private) check check

ESTIMATE Most write-ups still put private-sector employer NPS at 10% of salary in the old regime. Some say Budget 2024 made 14% apply to everyone. This page uses 10% for old-regime private employees until the CBDT table says otherwise.

Employer NPS under Section 80CCD(2)

09

Home Loan Interest: Section 24(b)

SELF-OCCUPIED
₹2L cap

Interest deduction capped at ₹2 lakh a year. Not allowed in the new regime.

LET-OUT
No cap

Full interest is deductible. The new regime allows it, but a house-property loss cannot be set off against salary.

warning NEW REGIME WARNING

For a house you live in, the ₹2 lakh interest cap, principal under 80C, and Sections 80EE and 80EEA are old regime only. The new regime allows interest on a let-out house, but that loss cannot be set off against salary.

On a joint loan, each person can claim up to ₹2 lakh of interest, plus principal under Section 80C, only if that person is both an owner and a borrower and the EMI leaves their own bank account.

10

Professional tax by state

Professional tax is a state charge, deducted from salary. The income-tax deduction under Section 16(iii) is old regime only, and the legal cap is ₹2,500 a year. Your salary slip is the number that counts. The table is the usual salaried slab.

State Monthly Annual Max
Maharashtra₹200₹2,500
Karnataka₹200₹2,400
Tamil Nadu₹135-₹208₹2,500
Andhra Pradesh₹150-₹200₹2,500

Chhattisgarh₹83-₹208₹2,500
Goa₹150-₹200₹2,500
Uttar Pradesh₹125-₹200₹2,500
DelhiNILNo PT

Odisha abolished professional tax with effect from 1 April 2026 (Odisha Repeal Ordinance, 2026). No PT is deducted in Odisha from FY 2026-27.

11

Section 87A rebate and marginal relief

Section 87A can wipe out the tax if taxable income is low enough. Figures below are from the CBDT resident benefits table (Section 87A, labelled AY 2026-27).

NEW REGIME
₹0 tax if TI ≤ ₹12L

Rebate: ₹60,000. Marginal relief: tax capped at income above 12L for income between 12L and ~12.70L.

OLD REGIME
₹0 tax if TI ≤ ₹5L

Rebate of ₹12,500. No marginal-relief band.

In the new regime, if taxable income is between ₹12 lakh and about ₹12.70 lakh, marginal relief limits the tax to the income above ₹12 lakh. The estimate used here for the top of that band, before cess, is about ₹12,70,588.

ESTIMATE Marginal relief upper bound is ~₹12,70,588 (before cess).
12

TDS on Salary

Section 192 is how salary tax is collected. Your employer estimates the year's tax and cuts a share every month.

receipt_long Form 16

Form 16 is the annual certificate. Part A lists the employer, PAN, and tax deducted. Part B lists the salary breakup and taxable income. You need it to file the return.

If PAN is inoperative, Section 206AA withholds at the highest of the prescribed rate, the rate in force, or 20%. That extra rate applies only where the normal rate is below 20%. See PAN-Aadhaar consequences.

check_circle Verify Your TDS

Compare Form 26AS with AIS before you file. A mismatch with Form 16 is a common reason a return is picked for a check.
